Archival material of the month - May 2012

The archival material in May commemorates the 225th anniversary of Hungarian veterinary education.
Joseph Franz II declared in the decision of December 12, 1786 that a veterinary department be established at the Medical Faculty of the University in Pest and appointed Sándor Tolnay head of the department. The document summerizes his suitability for the job by the following statement: "he has all the necessary capabilities". Sándor Tolnay (1747-1818) graduated as a veterinarian in Vienna. Between 1769 and 1775 he studied horse-breeding and horse-healing in Paris and other cities of France, then in London.
The department rented the Skopek Manor in Józsefváros. They were given 549 forints and 50 pennies in order to obtain the necessary surgical instruments and a reference library. To ensure practical training, it was ordered that stables be belonged to the department where Tolnay "may keep one or more animals".
The lectures began in mid-February and lasted until the end of July, so they were limited to only one semester, and the students of medicine and chirurgy had to listen to lectures for three hours a week. The lectures covered the most common infectious diseases of horses, sheep and pigs.

Panarícium (büdös sántaság)

Kérődzők, főként juhok betegsége. Okozója a Bacteroides nodosus. A csülkök közötti bőrből a csülökirha lemezei közé terjedő elhalásos gyulladás, szarutokleválás alakul ki. Az állatok sántítanak, lábvégeik átható szagúak. Innen ered a betegség magyar neve, a "bödős sántaság".
Megelőzési lehetőség a tiszta, száraz alom, a rendszeres csülökápolás, a lábvégsérülések kerülése, az istállók kijárata, itatók körüli tócsák megszüntetése, továbbá hetente egyszer 5 percig tartó "lábáztatás", illetve az alom szuperfoszfátos beszórása. Vásárlás előtt meg kell győződni az állat betegségtől való mentességéről, vásárlás után pedig egyhónapos karantén szükséges. Panarícium megjelenése után enyhébb esetekben a levált szarurészek eltávolítása, majd a beteg irha fertőtlenítőoldattal történő 2-3 naponkénti kezelése szükséges. A betegeket el kell különíteni. Súlyosabb esetekben a gyógyulás sebészeti ellátással és gyógyszeres kezeléssel történik.
E havi iratunk az Astralin nevű gyógyszer használati utasítása, amely részletesen leírja a büdös sántasággal fertőzött juhok, illetve szarvasmarhák ellátását, és kitér a súlyos és kevésbé súlyos esetekre is.

The archival material of March is about pigeons. The Domestic Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) was derived from the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Pigeons and doves constitute the bird family Columbidae.
Pigeons now live in urban areas, especially in large cities, causing much trouble. Since they can serve as a source of diseases, they are also known as "flying rats". However, these animals are also valuable and versatile. They used to serve as carrier pigeons, then as flying/sporting pigeons, fancy pigeons and utility pigeons as well.
The archival material of the month contains color pictures introducing pigeons from a positive point of view. This document from 1961, showing color images of various pigeon species, certifies that Eugene Kuthy and his pigeons won the first prize.

Archival material of the month - February 2012

This month, a cattle license is being presented. The cattle license was first mentioned by the regulation XX of 1847. Its aim is to certify the property right and prevent cattle plague. By today, this document has developed into an official certificate, and cattle license has been replaced by the ENAR, or RFID.
This document certifies Pál Böszörményi’s 40 pigs which were bought by Mathias Zadák in Prague in 1899.

Documents on dogs are being presented this month. To ensure protection against rabies (Lyssa rabies) the most important thing was keeping immunization records. Moreover, the dog also must have had some identifiers. It could have been either a pedigree, a dog keeping card or simply a pass. In general, the above listed documents contained the vaccines given to the dog and the dog-owner’s details, but many documents, certifying only the fact of vaccination, survived. In one case, the dog-owner took his dog for vaccination, but the dog did not have a card, so a temporary document was issued there. The card also contained the breed of the dog.

In one case, the document listed the following breeds: mongrel, pumi, puli, kuvasz, komondor, German shepherd. So in 1953, these were the most common breeds, it was possible to choose between them or underscore one of them, or to enter the “Other” box that it was a different dog breed. The choice of colors (white, black, yellow, brown, red, dun, ash) was possible in a similar way. It was also given for which purpose the dog was kept.

Az állatorvosi képzés 200 éves bicentenáriumi ünnepsége e havi levéltári anyagunk témája. A meghívó az 1987. május 26-án és 27-én tartott bicentenáriumi ünnepség programját tartalmazza. Levéltárunk őrzi a szerteágazó, nagy ívű szervezési munkálatok iratait. Forgatókönyv készült a május 25-i kiállításmegnyitóról, a május 26-i délelőtti és délutáni programokról és a koszorúzásról, a május 27-i tudományos ülésről. Szervezési iratok, programtervek és a meghívottak számtalan változatú névsora keletkezett az ünnepség előtt, köszönetnyilvánítások az ünnepség után.

Archival material of the month - October 2011

The archival material of the month in October is the student records from 1874. The archive has these type of documents from the period of 1802-1891, part of which is lost. Sheets remaining from each year are preserved in the archive in thin booklets, which include the student’s date of birth, place of birth, address in Buda-Pest, and the half-year marks.
Three types of students’ personal records can be found in the archive: Student Records (1802-1891), Veterinary Student Registers (1874-1989), and Register Sheets (1946-1952).

Archival material of the month - September 2011

This document, in which Gábor Szarka farrier and cattle doctor - on the basis of the syndromes and his practice - declares that the horse is glandered, was delivered to Ákos Azary (1851-1888) DVM in 1826.
This disease - as it is written in the document - was present in Budapest in the summer of 1826. The sick horse was bought for Count Nicholas Esterhazy.

Schwanner Jenő 1946-ban megalakult állategészségügyi igazgatási és törvényszéki állatorvostani tanszék első professzora volt 1946 és 1963 között. Tartalékos katonai alorvosként ("al-állatorvosként") 1915. június 17-én, Bécsben, szolgálatai elismeréséül arany érdemkereszttel, a szalagon vitézségi éremmel tüntette ki a Császári és Királyi Hadügyminisztérium. Ennek az oklevélnek a képe a hónap irata, külön közöljük a díszes oklevél bal oldalán látható szárazpecsét képét is.
